Déja Vu after Day 1 of National Qualifying Tournament for Maybank Malaysian Open 2010
Fifty-one local professionals battle it out for five spots
After day one of the National Qualifying Tournament for the Maybank Malaysian Open 2010 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, two familiar faces are atop the leader-board going into tomorrow’s final round. A record 51 local pros are competing in the National Qualifying Tournament, 15 more than the number that took part last year, which is a testament to the growth of the tournament and the game.
R .Nachimutu is once again leading the pack and will be aiming to claim the top spot and take his place in the Maybank Malaysian Open 2010 come March 4.
“The course was in superb condition and the weather was fine, it wasn’t that hot at all,” said Nachimutu after his round of 72 (two birdies and one double bogey) on the West Course. “However, it was a tough round overall and I’m just going to stick to my game plan tomorrow and try to hit all the fairways.”
Five places are up for grabs at the 49th edition of the Maybank Malaysian Open so tomorrow will be a tough day for the field of local players who want to join some of the best players in the world for the US$2million prize purse event from 4 – 7 March 2010.
Tying with Nachimutu for first place on 72 (two birdies and two bogeys) after the first round is Anis Helmi Hassan. He bettered his position from Day 1 last year where he was second going into the final day.
“The greens are not easy here and it was a challenging day for me but I’m glad to be in the position I am right now,” said Helmi. “I will be working on my game with my caddie who has helped me tremendously and aim to be patient and calm tomorrow.”
Tee off for the final day of competition begins at 7.30am with media invited to attend and meet the winners at the post press conference at 3pm. Local pros who have qualified through the Asian Tour will also be on hand for any interviews and comments.
